  • In your English GCSE writing, to gain a top grade, you’ll need to show – across your folder of coursework – that you can use a range of written styles.
  • Your writing will need, to your reader, to seem clear, concise, lively and interesting.

* Unless you’re a natural-born genius, there’s only one way to achieve this: become your future reader!

* To do this, after writing a section, say a sentence or a paragraph, switch mind-set from the writer to a future imaginary reader.

* Now… as the ‘reader’, think: “Is this writing holding my attention? Is it clear, concise, lively and interesting for me to read? Or is it boring… patronising… over-long… messy… inaccurate…?”

  • You’ll need to use appropriate language that is suited both in layout and style to its form or genre and to its audience and purpose. For grade A this means using well-chosen and sometimes sophisticated words and phrases and sentence types – always considering how your reader – your ‘audience’...
