Year 11 Mocks Paper 2

Section A: Poems from Different Cultures

What you did well:

  • Wrote about two poems
  • Used quotations well
  • Began to use poetic terminology
  • Showed an understanding of feelings, attitudes and ideas
  • Started to use some cross reference between poems
  • Showed some understanding of a variety of poetic techniques and the ways they related to the focus of the question


What you need to improve:

  • Integrate brief cross reference between the two poems throughout your essay – don’t just compare them at the end
  • Use poetic terminology much more, e.g. metaphor, simile, alliteration, stanza, onomatopoeia, but make sure it is accurate and enhances your analysis – there is no point in feature-spotting!
  • Focus on the question – don’t just copy down all your notes without paying attention to the question
  • Address the key words of the question in your answer
  • To gain an A, include an argument in your essay, develop your analysis further and show empathy with the writer


Section B: Writing to Inform, Explain, Describe

What you did well:

  • Generally secure spelling and punctuation
  • Clear identification with purpose of task
  • Usually structured your responses clearly and logically
  • Began to add detail
  • Began to develop ideas fully
  • Showed a good awareness of your audience

  • Organise your ideas into paragraphs more carefully
