The Nuts and Bolts of Textual Analysis for English Language A Level

Getting used to the demands of textual analysis at A Level is often a major hurdle for students. With English Language A Level, there’s a new technical vocabulary that needs to be learnt, and there’s often a degree of rustiness over the basics of grammar.

Aim

  • To introduce new students (and perhaps new teachers) of A Level English Language to key frameworks and linguistic methods, using a range of written and spoken texts as a starting point
  • To equip students of all abilities with the necessary language toolkit to cope with any text at A Level

Outline

  • Session 1nuts and bolts: looking at word classes, phrases and sentences
  • Session 2spanners and hammers: looking at how texts are assembled and how to pull them apart.
  • Session 3building your own toolkit: looking at how to group and compare texts with your own range of language tools.

Availability & Duration

We can run this workshop as a half day, twilight or Saturday session. The workshop takes approximately 3 hours but we can tailor it to fit in with you. For instance, we can extend it with an additional practical session.

Cost

The fee for this course is £20 per student with a minimum of 20 students. We can run the course with fewer students but the fee would still be £400. Travel expenses are applicable for centres in remote locations from our team leaders.

Leader

Dan Clayton is an experienced English Language A Level teacher and senior examiner / moderator who has been working in the sixth form sector for over 15 years. Currently working on a grammar project at the Survey of English Usage at UCL, Dan is also teaching English Language A Level in Essex and has written extensively for eMagazine, NATE’s English Drama Media, Teachit and Nelson Thornes.

Inside Investigations: Setting, Supporting and Developing Language Investigations in A Level English Language

Language investigations have been a key component of most English Language A Levels for some time now and are probably the closest some students will get to an undergraduate linguistics dissertation. For many students, it will be the first time they’ve been given the freedom to explore a topic for themselves, and that brings the potential for exciting explorations as well as directionless meanderings.

Aim

  • To help teachers set well thought-out investigation questions for their students
  • To look at key research that has already been carried out and how it might be used as a model for students
  • To suggest analytical approaches that play to students’ strengths
  • To offer linked ideas for media texts (AQA B) and language interventions (AQA A)

Outline

  • Session 1question and hypothesis setting: best-case and worst-case scenarios; models of research: a run through of different methodologies and approaches that have worked for linguists and students before and what we can learn from them
  • Session 2supporting analysis and developing student overviews: looking at productive approaches to different types of data and how to hit the top bands for analysis
  • Session 3 (optional) – making links: looking at ways to link media texts and language interventions to investigations

Setting up A Level English Language

English Language A Level has been one of the fastest growing A level courses of recent years, but there are very few English teachers with Language and/or Linguistics backgrounds. This course is designed to help schools and colleges which haven’t taught English Language before plan a course from scratch, resource it and start equipping new teachers of English Language with the skills and knowledge they need to get the best from their students.

Aim

This course is designed to:

  • assess the differing demands of English Language specifications and help centres choose the course that works for their intake
  • help staff plan a route through the first year of an AS
  • provide starter tasks and ideas for activities in key topic areas
  • offer guidance about resourcing an English Language A Level

Outline

  • Session 1comparing the specifications: looking at the different Language specs and considering the differing subject content, assessment methods, exam questions and theoretical approaches covered in each.
  • Session 2planning the first year: planning how to cover the first year of the course, with an emphasis on analytical frameworks and developing teachers’ subject knowledge.
  • Session 3resourcing the course: selecting the best resources to help develop teachers’ confidence and students’ skills on the new course.

The New Ofsted Framework 2012

How to achieve ‘outstanding’ provision in English. This course is suitable for Heads of English and Literacy Coordinators.

Outcomes

Delegates who may be unfamiliar with the new Ofsted framework (Jan 2012) will find this course hugely informative with its focus upon the revised set of characteristics for ‘outstanding’ English provision. Delegates will be given the opportunity to explore and examine how different schools have achieved ‘outstanding’ in their provision of English.  They will be able to consider, throughout the day, how their schools may adapt their current provision in English to better suit the needs of their learners.  There will be ample opportunity to discuss and collaborate with others on how they can ensure that their curriculum suits their school context.

Aim

This course is designed to:

  • Introduce the new Ofsted framework (Jan 2012) with a focus on English
  • Examine how the new framework will affect our current perceptions of ‘outstanding’ English provision
  • Allow delegates to discuss/collaborate with others in how they might adapt their English provision within their individual contexts
  • Offer practical ways in which delegates can achieve ‘outstanding’ provision of English within their own institutions

Leader

Natalie Reece has wide-ranging experience of teaching English across the full ability range with 15 years’ teaching experience in comprehensive schools.  She has worked with all exam boards such as AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR and WJEC and has proven success at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 in English Literature, English Language and Media Studies. 

Natalie has previously been a Head of English in an 11-18 comprehensive school, during which time her experiences included preparing and leading the English Department through a five day Ofsted Inspection; Natalie was described as “dedicated to ensuring the highest possible standards” and her leadership/management of the English Department was rated “excellent.”

Natalie works with Heads of English and English Departments across the UK to develop outstanding English provision and raise student achievement in a wide variety of schools.  She also works extremely closely with the Ofsted Inspection Framework 2012 to develop innovative practice in learning and teaching within English.

Natalie has worked with staff, both internationally and in the UK, focusing on how to develop outstanding practice and raise student achievement at both GCSE and AS/A2 level and in the IGCSE. In addition, she has considerable experience of working with a range of students, delivering ‘Raise Your Grade’ revision conferences and workshops in English and English Literature.

Natalie is an accredited facilitator with the National College for School Leadership (NCSL); she writes materials for, and delivers, the Middle Leadership Development Programme (MLDP) to a wide range of Middle Leaders within primary, secondary and special schools.

Natalie is currently completing an MA in Education and has completed an
M.Ed Leadership and Management module focusing on NQT Induction.  Other areas of focus include Assessment for Learning, Literacy and Maximising the Achievement of Boys in English.
