Developing Form and Style

Once you’ve settled on your argument and established what you’re going to say, you need to work out how you’re going to say it, where you’re going to say it and what order to put it all in. Most of these areas are interlinked, so the style you write in will have quite a lot to do with the form you are adopting.

How to improve grades when writing for Othello

This EnglishEdu guide on Shakespeare’s popular A Level play, Othello, aims to supplement rather than replace other readily available Internet and printed material for the teaching of the play.

The guide explores the issues, themes and characters in the play that are particularly relevant to the current (2010) A Level Literature specifications. To add to the usefulness, and with an eye to the central AO requirement of close textual analysis of form, structure and...

Language Investigations

This is a guide to preparing students for the various ‘Investigations in English Language’ units that form part of many A Level English Language courses. It has been written to cover the A2 coursework requirements for the following examination boards:

AQA ‘A’ | AQA ‘B’ | Edexcel | WJEC
  • The basic requirements for the investigation are broadly similar across all boards but where needed, specific advice for a particular exam board’s specification is shown and clearly identified.

Teacher’s Guide to ENGA3 - Language Explorations »

This guide is for the examined part of AQA English Language A2 A: ENGA3, entitled “Language Explorations”.

It has a far broader scope than the previous year’s AS paper, requiring students to look far beyond their own linguistic experiences in the study of three topics:

  • Language Change

- specifically, changes in the English Language since 1600.

  • Language Variation

- specifically, differences in the usage of the English Language by user and context.

  • Language Discourses

- specifically, how language issues are written about and...

ENGA1 Seeing Through Language »

This guide is for teaching ENGA1, the examined unit for the AQA ‘A’ English Language AS specification.

As its title implies, the unit encourages students to look at language differently – far more analytically – than they will have done for their GCSE English work. The final two-hour exam paper tests students on two topics:

‘Language and Mode’

This is a single compulsory question based on two linked unseen texts of different ‘modes’.

‘Language Development’

This asks students to choose between two questions, one based...

AQA English Language ‘A’ - ENGA2 »

The Coursework Unit

ENGA2 is the first unit of the 2009 AQA-A English Language A level course. It’s an internally-assessed coursework unit and is worth 40% of the AS mark (i.e. 20% of the A-level). It consists of two sections:

  • Investigating a representation
  • Producing a representation

It’s important that these two aspects are seen as interconnected: the minute your students analyse how a feature writer ridicules what he considers to be the excesses of the current ‘health and safety’ mentality, they will also be becoming aware of...

Introduction

Child Language Acquisition is one of most enjoyable and apparently accessible topics for students of English Language A level. However, because of the enthusiasm and the apparent accessibility it becomes all too easy for study of this topic to remain fairly superficial, with identification of features not brought into a coherent, logical analysis related to the bigger picture, a characteristic which is the key to the higher grades.

Although different in their exact application, the various syllabuses have the same threads...
