January 18, 2010 | Forward to a colleague
Hello, and a very Happy New Year from the staff at English.edusites.co.uk. If you’re already a subscriber, we’ve been thrilled to hear from many of you that you’re finding the site’s content useful; and if you’re thinking of subscribing and joining hundreds of your colleagues already here, please be assured of a welcome and a true willingness to help.
We enjoy receiving your emails and promise a quick and hopefully useful response to each and every one. We love to hear of suggestions for new site content, so do please keep those emails coming in!
For our newsletter this month, with Christmas and its welcome holidays now behind us, we thought it might be useful if we changed from giving our usual list of new English.edusites.co.uk resources; this time, we’ll be highlighting a few other websites that are popular with English teachers around the country.
With GCSE revision in mind, both BBC Bitesize and my own Englishbiz.co.uk will soon be receiving their usual annual boost to their hit counters! It’s always fascinating to see just how increasingly near to exams the real surge in students checking into these sites occurs. Over the years, I’ve noticed the surge getting ever closer to exam day – as if English were one of those subjects that is amenable to last-minute cramming! Well, obviously very many students think so – but we’ve still got a few months to convince them otherwise!
Other well-known web sites for English teachers are, of course, FRET / Englishteaching.co.uk (a site developed by Chantel Mathias), Teachit.co.uk (a site created by Siobhan Archer) and the ever-popular TES English Community. For A-level English Language teachers, Mark Boardman’s English Language List (ELL) is very popular – certainly for the many who subscribe to it and its sister Discussion Board, it seems a wonderful resource indeed.
NATE’s website (National Association for the Teaching of English) and its publications are a rich source of ideas, resources and advice, too; likewise, the EMC (English & Media Centre) provides excellent resources, as well as providing popular courses that you can attend as part of your CPD.
English.edusites.co.uk continues to grow as our teacher-authors add and refine resources on the site for GCSE and A level English Language, English Language & Literature and English Literature. More site content is planned and, as we’ve said already, please e-mail in any requests.
On a lighter note, the students who attend our own fictional Ardnox High have been keeping themselves busy in their English and Media Studies classes. Why not drop in to see them in action by clicking on a link below?

Finally, and again, a very happy New Year and Spring Term to all of you.
