AQA

Paper 2: Modern Texts and Poetry

  • Written exam: 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • 96 marks in total (30 marks on Animal Farm only plus 4 marks for AO4)
  • 60% of GCSE (including poetry mark here)
  • One essay question from a choice of two and candidates are advised to spend about an hour on this section
  • Assessment objectives covered are: AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4

Edexcel

Component 1 –  Section B: Post 1914 British Play or novel

  • Written exam lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes
  • 80 marks in total for this paper ( 40 marks for Animal Farm which includes 8 marks for SPaG)
  • 50% of the GCSE (including Shakespeare essay as well in Section A of the exam)
  • One essay question chosen from a choice of two; candidates are advised to spend about 50 minutes on this section
  • Assessment objectives covered are: AO1, AO3 and AO4

OCR

Component 01: Exploring Modern and Literary Heritage Texts – Section A

  • Written exam lasting 2 hours
  • 80 marks in total for this paper (40 marks for essays on ‘Animal Farm)
  • 25% of total GCSE mark (including 19th Century Prose to make up the other 25%)
  • One extended response style question split into two parts: a) and b). The first question compares an unseen modern extract with the text being studied and the second part of the question is about Animal Farm
  • Candidates are advised to spend 45 minutes on part a) and 30 minutes on part b)
