This activity is primarily targeted at AQA B English Language students who are studying Language and Gender/ Power/ Technology as part of ENGB1, though it may be of interest to students following other A level and Media Studies specifications as well. The task is to consider how masculinity is represented in a script from the video game Battlefield 4. Though gender is the focus, concepts related to power and to technology are also relevant here. The script is below, followed by Teacher Notes which provide an analysis of the text and an overview of some of the issues it raises.

IRISH: Shit!

DUNN: This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen, Irish. Recker, take my gun. It’s yours now.

IRISH: What the f*ck are you thinking, Dunn? What the f*ck are you thinking?

DUNN: For the wolf to survive, it’s got to chew off its own leg. Fire!

IRISH: Negative, don’t do it.

DUNN: Now, Recker! Shoot out the window! That’s an order.

IRISH: Don’t you f*cking do it, Recker!

DUNN: Save yourselves! Get out of here! Get out of here!

IRISH: This is f*cking bullshit, man.

DUNN: Shoot the window, or you’ll all die! If you’re the man I think you...
