AQA GCSE Unit 3b Guide to Creative Writing

June 2015 Submission

    Candidates must complete two tasks. Each task must be taken from a different column.
  • Work should be produced under formal supervision in time totalling up to four hours. The responses do not need to be of equal length. They do not have to be completed in the same session.

The objective assessed in this part of Unit 3 is:

AO4 Writing

  • Write to communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, using and adapting forms and selecting vocabulary appropriate to task and purpose in ways that engage the reader.
  • Organise information and ideas into structured and sequenced sentences, paragraphs and whole texts, using a variety of linguistic and structural features to support cohesion and overall coherence.
  • Use a range of sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate punctuation and spelling.

Controlled Assessment Tasks for GCSE English Language Unit 3 Part b: Producing Creative Texts (Creative Writing)

Creative writing is one of the modules students really enjoy as they are able to think outside the box and really engage with the topics. To start off, always outline the unit well for students. Explain what the focus is and also what is expected of students. Share the assessment foci with students too and explain that the unit of work will focus on these aspects in particular (the introduction of the unit often takes 10 – 15 minutes of a lesson and I tend to move on to a warm-up exercise which students enjoy).

Use a range of sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate punctuation and spelling.

Starter Activity

Ask students to work in pairs. They must produce a summary of a story containing the following ingredients. All the ingredients must be used:

  • A blunt object
  • A suitcase
  • A birthday party
  • Astrology
  • A couple

They have 15 minutes to work on this task. They must also aim to use sentences in an interesting...
