    Lesson 8 Chapters 26 - 27

    Lesson Objective

    • To develop knowledge of the plot
    • To be able to write about Jane and Bertha Mason

    Assessment Objectives

    • AO1: Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response; use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.
    • AO2: Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.

    Starter Activity - Lawful Impediments

    Display the following on the board:

    This place in which we are gathered has been duly sanctioned according to law, for the celebration of marriage.

    You are here today to witness the joining in matrimony of …...  and ......

    If any person present knows of any lawful impediment to this marriage, he or she should declare it now, or forever hold your peace.

    Class discussion – pose the question – what impedes marriage? Students to discuss the obstacles which prevent or should prevent persons from marrying.

    Main Activity – Bertha Mason

    Students are to look in detail at the description of Bertha Mason in chapter 26; they should consider how Bronte describes her and note how she acts. Students to work in pairs, make notes and fill in facts about the following:

    • Information about Bertha’s Mother
    • Information about Richard Mason
    • Grace Poole’s real occupation
    • Bertha’s appearance
    • Bertha’s reaction on seeing Mr Rochester

    Individual Writing:

    1. Using quotations from the text, explain how Bronte presents Bertha Mason in this chapter
    2. Using...
