How the Component is Assessed

Component 2: 19th-century Novel and Poetry since 1789

Assessment Overview - 50% of total GCSE.

  • 80 marks
  • 1 hour 45 minutes written paper

Content Overview - Reading and Responding to:

  • One novel from the 19th-century
  • One section of poetry from the Edexcel anthology

This is a closed book examination. The texts will not be allowed in the examination with the student.

  • One essay question exploring the whole text. It is worth 40 marks.

This assessment will test, through an extract, knowledge and understanding of the 19th century prose novel. Learners will be expected to comment upon the context of the prose text, the language, structure and form of the text and key themes, characters and ideas within the text. The students must refer to this extract in their essay response, as well as discussing the rest of the novel. The assessment criteria is looking for some analysis of language in the response, so having the source in front of them gives them some text to work with. The learners will also be asked a question focused on the whole text. The key idea within this question will link to the extract but the learners are expected to respond to parts of the novel other than the extract.
