Teacher’s Notes.

This guide is specifically aimed at GCSE writing for English / English Language Edexcel Exam board. That said, the teaching of writing is a skills’ focused unit so the guide can easily adapted for use with GCSE syllabuses from AQA, WJEC and OCR or the iGCSE syllabuses. It covers all of the assessment criteria from organising and planning to sentence structure and apostrophes and again, although the focus is Edexcel, broadly similar assessment objectives apply across all examination boards.

The guide includes explanations and tasks and is intended to be adaptable and deliverable in a number of ways, for example, it can be used individually by students for independent learning or homework. Pupils can address their individual writing targets and work on them. Alternatively, it can also be used as a more traditional presentation in the classroom, for cover work or to provide some background to the basics for NQTs. For a more ambitious and engaging way of approaching the tasks, groups of pupils can use the presentation to research a teacher selected target area and then present their findings back to the class in a variety of ways.
A number of the tasks are also designed to encourage self-reflection and taking responsibility of their own work.

I have also tried to differentiate for abilities ranging from Edexcel GCSE Band 3 (roughly D) to Band 5 (A*). There are however, a number of activities that can be used with lower ability students.

Student’s Guide to the Resource.

This resource is designed to help you independently revise your writing skills.

All you need to do is check your writing targets with your teacher. You can then identify your target on the following marking schemes. Only bands 4 and 5 are listed as everyone should be aiming for at least band 4!
