Answer all of the following questions

The separate Resource Material for use with Section A is an account “John Macintyre? in 1824 and the article ‘My world was now black’’ published in 2011.

Read the passage from “John Macintyre? in the separate Resource Material.

Question A1 (3 marks)

  • (a) Before the man was pronounced dead, what had been his illness? [1 mark]
  • Fever
  • (b) What sound did he hear before the nurse said ‘He is dead’? [1 mark]
  • The sound of someone Weeping
  • (c) Who closed his eyelids? [1 mark]

Question A2 [10 marks]

  • The writer gives the impression that he was greatly distressed by his experience- how does he do this? [10 marks]

You should comment on:

  • what he says to influence readers
  • his use of language and tone
  • the way he presents his narrative
  • Emphasis that although he was thought to be dead, he was aware of what was happening. “but I could still hear, and feel and suffer? use of list, repetition of ‘and’ /polysyndeton list to emphasise how awful it was for him that he could still feel and suffer.  Placing ‘suffer’ last foregrounds this to the reader- reminding them that he was in pain.
  • The disgusting process of being eaten by worms/maggots ‘worms will be crawling about my flesh’ and ‘hideous thought’ indicates he is terrified of how he will die, and the image is unsettling for the reader.  ‘crawling’ suggests that the movement will be slow and tortuous/he cannot stop it/may be unable to find where they are.
  • When he refers to his body as ‘flesh’ we can infer that he is separating himself from his body and accepting his death/seeing himself as the worms do- as food.
  • The sound of earth is compared to ‘thunder’ a powerful noise that comes from nature, and one that is frightening and usually indicative of danger.
  • When the grave robbers find him they threw him ‘like a clod’ comparing himself to dirt indicates they treated him badly/as if he...
