How to use

  • At Edusites we think carefully about how teachers use our resources. These assessments have been written by experts and are designed to suit your needs both for this academic year and for future use.

Taking the exams

  • You have a choice of doing the whole paper as a mock or separating the questions for classroom use. We are aware that most schools assess one section of a paper at a time and printing the whole paper is unnecessary. Because of this you are able to click on the exam paper and cut the text off the site and paste it onto a word document or PowerPoint. The look of the exam question is not affected by your software.
  • At the end of the resource you will find the full exam paper which is downloadable and printable. This is a copyrighted document and as such must not be shared with any other institution.

Marking and grading these exams

  • The resources are based around your marking being a collaborative effort with your students and the online slides facilitate this.
  • Each question has a slide show which takes you and your students through the various levels along with indicative content.
  • Of course you can still mark these exam papers using the slides on your own but we wanted to give you the opportunity to run a feedback class which enabled students to see where they could improve their responses.

  • Unseen Fiction Anthology

    Students should read a variety of high-quality, challenging texts, in preparation for responding to unseen extracts in the examination. They should be able to read substantial pieces of writing, including whole and extended texts that make significant demands in terms of content, structure and the quality of the language. Throughout the qualification, students should develop the skills of interpretation and analysis.

    • Text types studied should include a range of forms, such as fiction, poetry, journalism (for example articles and reviews), speeches, journals and reference book extracts.
    • Text types should also include literary non-fiction texts, such as selections from autobiography, letters, obituaries and travel writing. These lists are not exhaustive.
    • Texts that are essentially transient, such as instant news feeds and advertisements, will not form part of the assessment.

    The sample texts that have been produced in this Anthology are based loosely around eight themes to allow for comparison and they illustrate the range of genres described above including fiction and some poetry. Students should build up in their learning a wide portfolio of sources that they can use beyond this in preparation for the exam. Within each anthology theme there is a discussion on how to use this material effectively in the classroom and in assessment and one partial sample set of questions with indicative content for each theme.
