Week Four

Students will read Act 4 and start to develop their close language analysis skills.

Lesson One

Learning Objective

How is language used to heighten tension in Act 4 Scene 1? So that I can closely analyse the use of language to create specific effects (AO2)

Starter Activity

Give each group or pair one of the words listed below. They are to mind map the connotations of that word. You can model this first if needed. Alternatively, do this as a whole class using mini whiteboards.

Main and Development

Read Act 4 Scene 1 up to Claudio’s exit. Model annotation on the board, reminding students that the exam has an extract, so they need to be able to closely analyse language in this way using appropriate terminology. As you come across the words that we used in the starter, have the groups come to the board and annotate that word. Having seen the word in context, they should then explain Shakespeare’s choice and the effect on the audience. This will develop their close analysis skills, as up until now they have worked with slightly longer quotes.


Looking at previous feedback, students should write a PEE paragraph about one of the lines from this scene answering the learning objective. Remind students to explore alternatives, to zoom in on language and to consider Shakespeare’s intentions and ideas/issues he wants to explore (you could have a success criteria on display)....
