Lesson Eight

Learning Objective

  • By the end of the lesson pupils will have a clear understanding of how Shylock’s character is shaped through specific language choices and the use of structure.
  • Some students will be able to closely analyse individual word choices and make explicit links to key themes addressed in the play.

Focus: AO1 and AO2

Act 3 Scene 1 is one of the most famous scenes in ‘The Merchant of Venice’. Before the class reading - show the clip to the class and reflect on what impact Shylock’s speech and his plea for humility has on the audience.

Class Reading: Act 3 Scene 1

Reflect on how Shylock is treated and mocked by Antonio’s friends at the start of the scene; consider how this behaviour is very difficult for Shylock to cope with and how this might impact on his behaviour. Reflect on how Shylock is again presented to the audience. He again arrives on stage in mid-speech. He comes across as bitter and angry and the two Christians, with their lack of empathy, are aggravating the situation.

In one of the most famous speeches of the play focus on how please for humility and understanding. Look at how he outlines how he has been treated by the others and how it has impacted on his choices now. It is important that pupils have a chance to perform this speech. In pairs, experiment how the speech can be performed to show his frustration but also his intelligence. They should perform it with the following ideas to enhance performance:

  • A movement to another point on the stage every time he uses the personal pronoun ‘me’ or ‘my’
