The Kite Runner

Sample Lesson Plan One

In this lesson we will look at chapter 4 from P24:-

  • After school, Hassan and I met up, grabbed a book, and trotted up a bowl-shaped hill just north of my father’s property in Wazir Akbar Khan.

to the end of the chapter: -

  • Because suddenly Afghanistan changed forever.

The learning objectives are

  • Developing our understanding of Amir and Hassan and the relationship between them at this early and relatively happy period of the novel.
  • We might also go on to consider how this section prepares us for what follows in the novel and the significance of this episode in its overall shape and development.

By the end of this lesson we should be able to answer the question

  • How is the relationship developed here, what do each of the characters contribute to it and how does it prepare us for what is to come?

Preparation

  • As part of your preparation you should have looked again and in detail at the text.
  • Make sure you are familiar with the whole scene and the stages by which it is developed.

Starter Activity

Split into groups of three or four and read the passage aloud, each of you taking particular note of the character you are reading (Amir's narrative and comments could be split for this). When you've finished give your impressions of each character to the group and briefly note down what has been saId in your discussion.
