Introduction

This collection of transcripts has been produced with A Level Language and combined Language and Literature teaching in mind, although some of the transcripts may also be suitable for use with the new Spoken Language GCSE unit.

A Level units featuring the analysis of speech are as follows:

AQA

English Language A – ENGA1, ENGA4 (investigation must focus on spoken aspects)
English Language B – ENGB1, ENGB4 (may use spoken data for investigation)
English Language and Literature A – ELLA2, ELLA3
English Language and Literature B – ELLB3

Edexcel

English Language – Unit 1, Unit 3, Unit 4 (if spoken data are chosen for the investigation)
English Language and Literature – Unit 1, Unit 3

OCR

English Language – central to F651 and F653, although needed to some extent in all four units
English Language and Literature – F671, F672 (although less focus on spontaneous speech, some speech and interaction features will be useful), F673

WJEC

English Language – relevant to all four units
English Language and Literature – LL1, LL3, LL4

The collection features a range of transcripts covering different types of talk, the majority sourced from media that will be familiar to students.  Where possible, a link to an online media file (e.g. on YouTube) is given, to allow students to follow the transcript initially and reinforce the normality of the sample.

Each transcript is accompanied by teaching notes, providing the following information:

  • Location: where to find the clip online (where applicable)
  • Genre: the kind of conversation the transcript features (e.g. negotiation, advice)...
