  • Component 2: 19th Century Prose
  • External written exam; this part is worth 20% as has to be taken alongside Post 1914 prose/drama as well as unseen poetry to make up to 60% of the exam ( Exam lasts for 2hrs, 30 mins)
  • Students will need to answer one essay question exploring the whole text. It is worth 40 marks.

This assessment will test, through a source based response, knowledge and understanding of the 19th century prose novel. Learners will be expected to comment upon the context of the prose text, the language, structure and form of the text and key themes, characters and ideas within the text. The students must refer to this extract in their essay response, as well as discussing the rest of the novel. The assessment criteria is looking for some analysis of language in the response, so having the source in front of them gives them some text to work with. Also, the candidates need to be methodically tracking through the extracts, for all questions. This approach will mean they don’t miss any vital bits of evidence and will give a coherent response. Extracts are carefully chosen and start and finish at key points, so students should be talking about the start, the middle, the end and bits in between.

Section B assesses AO1, AO2 and AO3.

Learners are not permitted to take copies of the set texts into the examination.

Assessment Objectives

Assessment objectives (AOs) are set by Ofqual and are the same across all GCSE English Literature specifications and all exam boards. The exams will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.

  • AO1: Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to:
  • maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response
  • use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.
