Eduqas Speaking and Listening »

Categories: Community Q&A, Speaking and Listening

How are departments tackling the logistics of Speaking and Listening for Eduqas? We are concerned about the use of classtime for this as it would be so time consuming to listen to an individual presentation from each student. Has anyone got any clever ideas? Kind regards, Helen

“With trepidation” is how departments are approaching the logistics of speaking and listening! We have a cohort of 270 students and the idea of recording all their speaking and listening tasks does not bear thinking about. Did you receive the AQA survey enquiring if a...

Controlled Assessment Titles for AQA GCSE English Language 4705 Spec »

Richard Gent | Thursday January 07, 2016

Categories: Community Q&A, Assessment

I have been teaching English 19 years and recently changed from lecturing in a college to key stage learners in a secure unit. We have students come and go at all stages throughout the year and I currently have 3 that need to do some controlled assessments from the AQA GCSE English Language 4705 spec. The problem is, I have little experience of designing the controlled assessments titles. Always being part of a massive team in the past, I delivered the exam prep and colleagues took other parts of the course. My new workplace has no other staff...

Reviewing Schemes of Work »

Richard Gent | Tuesday December 08, 2015

Categories: Community Q&A, Schemes

Over the Christmas holidays (!) I have to review what constitutes a good Scheme of Work and in this ever-changing game of teaching, what was once desirable (super-prescriptive, lesson-by-lesson breakdowns) has now become old hat. I’m particularly interested in seeing how colleagues record their SoW and wonder if anyone would share with me their template of how they record a SoW (or just a SOW if easier) in their school? I would be exceedingly grateful to receive any help from teaching colleagues. Many thanks in anticipation - and wishing you a...

Categories: Community Q&A, Speakers/Specialists

I was wondering if you could put me in contact with any speakers / specialists who come into schools to do workshops with KS4 students on English skills such as writing skills etc. Thanks Emma

John Nield who was a senior examiner for AQA for many years does really good workshops. He lives in Appley Bridge near Wigan and is self-employed. j.nield466@btinternet.com Gill Wilkinson

We had a writer called Joe Craig in during Activities Week a couple of years ago.  Worked well with Y7s, but I’m not sure how useful it was – more fun really…...

An Inspector Calls »

Categories: Community Q&A, Resources

I’m looking for some help with Edexcel Unit 3 English Lit Contemporary Drama for An Inspector Calls. I’m looking for the written assessment help, not the exam. I’ve never taught it! Looking for a SoW that I can use for a controlled assessment… The essay question is ‘To what extent does the character of Arthur Birling change in the course of AIC’... Would you point me in the right direction please? Thanks, Su Chapman

Don’t worry - it is a very straightforward play, and they will enjoy it and handle the assessment easily. I’m teaching it for the...

Progress Trackers »

Richard Gent | Tuesday October 06, 2015

Categories: Community Q&A, Assessment

Does anyone have an example of a progress tracker for students to stick in their books? Thanks, Laura Saunders

These are progress trackers I’ve designed for a range of subjects - mainly at Key stage 5. They could be adapted. Students find them very useful - particularly boys. Graham Thorpe
