In this lesson we will look at Act One pp 99- 106 (Penguin Edition)
Chris: We've made a terrible mistake with mother...... Kate: 'he's not going to marry her.'- The learning objective is to develop our understanding of Joe, Chris and Kate and the relationships between them as they appear both below and above the surface. We might also go on to consider how this section prepares us for what follows in the play and precipitates the final climax.
- By the end we should be able to answer the question: ‘in what ways and to what extent do each of them deceive themselves: and deceive each other? As part of your preparation you should have looked again and in detail at the text.
- Make sure you are familiar with the whole scene and the stages by which it is developed and the point at which these exchanges occur.
