The subject matter is hard hitting and disturbing, meaning that students are simultaneously intimidated by the enormity of the themes, and drawn in by its harrowing sense of reality. Some teachers have shied away from this text simply because the violent content is so raw; however, in my opinion, students find it very accessible and refreshing to study.
