Lesson Plan One

Starter Activity

Look at Alfred’s long speech to Veronica from Act One, P73 ‘Here they are….. ‘ to P74: “So that is how it was’.

Working in groups of three or four read through the speech to yourselves and then divide it up into the group number and read portions of it aloud to each other. Then:  discuss and agree on the tone, nuance and emphasis of the lines and how those qualities are modulated and varied/ developed as Alfred speaks it.

Main Activity

In the light of this go on and discuss (making notes on your conclusions):-

  1. What exactly were the circumstances of Oupa’s death?
  2. What did he die of?
  3. How do the imagery and symbolism add to this?

Extension Activity

Now go on and read (in the manner described above) the next passage: ‘There’s no grave, Veronica…. top of P75; ‘I’ll take you to that, if you like.’

And discuss:-

  1. How this links to the previous description of Oupa’s death
  2. The symbolism used in the passage and its effects
  3. How both passages challenge or support the big ideas in the play?
