Right at the beginning Henry tells us:-

We carefully line up all our dominoes …. Until a fateful little finger comes along and lightly touches the first one’.

How successful is the metaphor of the domino effect as an emblem of the play?

Indicative Content

  1. At the end of the play the dominoes have, we assume, all fallen down one after another in a series of inevitable actions and reactions which are dramatized in the play. Henry comes to face the sordid realities of his life and learns to love Solly and miss Adela: he has regained the capacity for humanity and human interaction.
  2. He refers at the outset to ‘that fateful little finger comes along and touches the first one.’ And then he goes on to reflect on what that might have been: his failed marriage, the birth of his child, his dismissal from his job.
  3. But then things become confusing: the one thing that is not mentioned here is his rampant alcoholism which he has tried, unsuccessfully,…
