This Anthology is for teachers of the new Pearson/Edexcel IGCSE English Literature Specification and in particular Paper 1 Section A – Unseen Poetry.
Unseen Poetry Anthology
Format of the Examination Paper
One 20 mark question exploring the meaning and effects created in an unseen poem.
Section A: Unseen Poetry
Students will apply their knowledge of poetic form, content and meaning to compare poems.
Students must:
- demonstrate understanding of how writers create literary effects using
- imagery
- descriptive skills
- language choice
- tone and mood
- structure and form
- understand and use appropriate literary terminology
- identify and use relevant examples from the poem
Questions will test the following assessment objective:

Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects
Within this Anthology there will be advice given to teachers on how to prepare and teach the unseen poetry element and a range of poems across five themes which teachers can use with supporting information on meaning and some discussion points for the classroom. Following on from this a range of assessment tasks are included for the Pearson/Edexcel exam. At the back of the Anthology is a glossary of poetry terms and a list of possible resources.
