‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’ - Lesson 1

Lesson One



In this lesson we will look at the scene from Act One on pages 19-22.

Jamie: Don’t look at me. This is the Kid’s story……….. to

Edmund: Shaughnessy almost wept because he hadn’t thought of that, but he said he’d include it in a letter he’s writing to Harker, along with a few other insults he’d overlooked.

The learning objective is to develop our understanding of the ways in which the characters are developed by the interactions between them and how they and their relationship has developed by the end of the extract. We are at the beginning of the play: it is morning, the sun is rising and the mood here is one of cautious hope and optimism.

We will then go on and consider which of the play's major themes are broached here.

By the end we should be able to answer the question: ‘how important is this scene in developing the characters, the relations between them and the tone, mood and ideas of the play?

As part of your preparation, you should have looked again and in detail at the text.

Make sure you are familiar with the narrative and the stages by which the characters are introduced.

Read the exchange carefully: ideally out loud, taking turns and parts.
