Lesson Two



In this lesson we will look at an extract from Act Two Scene Two.

It is on pages 67-70 from Jamie’s line You can’t talk to her now….. to Tyrone: We’re in for another night of fog, I’m afraid.

The learning objective is to develop our understanding of the ways in which the relevant aspects of the play have now moved on, in particular with Mary and Jamie, and their respective relationships with Tyrone.

We will then go on and consider which of the play's major themes are broached here.

By the end we should be able to answer the question: ‘how important are these scenes in contributing to the major themes and outcomes of the play?’

As part of your preparation, you should have looked again and in detail at the text.

Make sure you are familiar with the narrative and the stages by which the extract develops.

Read the following exchanges carefully: ideally out loud, taking turns and parts.

We need to consider this passage very carefully. It is starting to predicate the end of the play ever more clearly.

Starter Activity

Look again at the opening lines of the extract:-

You can’t talk to her now…….. she can’t suspect I’ve come to spy on her’.

And then the closing lines:-

Mary: (vaguely) You haven’t…
