Cynthia’s promotion and its consequences: Act Two Scene Three.

The learning objective is to develop and complete our understanding of Cynthia, and appreciate the ways in which Stan acts as the good friend to support her.

Read through the scene between Cynthia and Stan from the opening, up to the entrance of Tracey and Jessie.

Cynthia: On a cruise, Panama Canal. That’s where I’d like to be right now……….

Cynthia: We thought he was crazy

Stan: Yeah.

Cynthia: Was he?
 



Starter Activity

Cynthia looks around.

I was kinda hoping they’d show up. It’s one thing we always do together’.

(i.e. celebrate each other’s birthdays)

Look back at the previous scene (2.2) and suggest five (or more) reasons that suggest why the others ‘won’t turn up’.

They believe (and tell her) that:-

  1. She has not been truthful with regard to the management ‘offer’ and subsequent lock out
  2. She has broken her promises to them and avoided them
  3. That she is still lying when she explains how ruthless and uncompromising the management will be
  4. The she is merely parroting the management’s line
  5. That her dismissal of the Union’s power is wrong.

All in all, she cuts a very lonely and slightly pathetic figure: but then so do the rest when they eventually arrive.
