Adjective

An adjective is a member of a grammatical word class that functions to modify or make more specific and noun. Adjectives are ‘describing’ words that generally precede the noun they are modifying (in this case premodifying) to create a more specific noun phrase, e.g. ‘This is a useful website’.

By using the verb ‘to be’, adjectives can also occupy a different syntactic position, and be placed after the noun; and thus post-modify a noun. For example, ‘This web site is very useful’.

Adjectives are said to be gradable according to whether a simple comparison is made between two nouns or between a group of nouns, thus: big, big, biggest; good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; exceptional, more exceptional, most exceptional.
