Co-operative Principle
Conversation is a social interaction and co-operative and thus aims to be truthful, clear, brief and relevant. ‘Flouting’ a maxim creates an implicature, i.e. a response that implies more than it says, e.g. ‘Don’t call us, we’ll call you’ (i.e. ‘We won’t call you’) – see face. (Grice, 1975)
