Conjunction

A word class composed of words that are used as ‘joining words’. Conjunctions function to link words, phrases and clauses. Some conjunctions link equal grammatical units. These are called coordinating conjunctions and the common ones are and, but, or, either… or, neither…nor. These can individual words, phrases or main clauses.

A particular kind of conjunction that can an independent to a dependent clause is called a subordinating conjunction. There are many of these, e.g. if, when, where, unless, etc. Also see sentence and clause.
