According to linguist Halliday, this is one aspects of language register. Field is ‘that which is going on’ in a conversation, e.g. its overall topic or subject matter, e.g. the field of schoolroom discourse (which, confusingly might have as its topic, holiday destinations or pop music, as well as school related topics).
