Hedge / hedging
A conversational turn that consisting of phrases such as ‘sort of’, ‘kind of’…’ are used as a means of being ‘uncommitted’, less ‘direct’ or blunt – and thus more polite. Some research suggests that women tend to use conversational hedges more often than males (see also minimal response and tag questions).
